Would you actually believe that honour killing does not happen in today's times? Well, it still does until today. It is sad but true. NH10 has shown the brutal reality of the Indian society, especially in the North of India. NH10 is a 2015 Crime Drama film which revolves around a married couple, Meera Singh (Portrayed by Anushka Sharma) and Arjun Puri (Portrayed by Neil Bhoopalam). Both Meera and Arjun were headed off for a weekend trip out of the city of Gurgaon to celebrate Meera's birthday during the weekend. However, during their road trip, they see a group of goons chasing a couple named Pinky (Portrayed by Kanchan Sharma) and Mukesh (Portrayed by Tushar Grover). Arjun, wanting to help the couple, approaches Satbir (Portrayed by Darshan Kumar), the leader of the group of goons and asks him if there is any problem. Satbir slaps him and goes off with his group, Mukesh and Pinky. Arjun and Meera both follow the gang and witness honour killing, where Pinky's brother, Satbir kills Mukesh with Arjun's gun and poisons his own sister, Pinky. Both Mukesh and Pinky were killed for marrying out of their own caste. Chhote (Portrayed by Ravi Beniwal), has the keys to Arjun and Meera's car. Arjun has asked Chhote to return the car keys. However, Chhote was stubborn and refused to give the car keys. Arjun then shoots Chhote and he dies. Arjun and Meera runs off and the gang decides to chase and kill them from then on. This is when the chase starts. When I saw the trailer, I was mind blown and knew that this film would be really promising to the audience. However, at the start, I was a little hesitant to watch this movie only because I thought it was really violent from whatever snippets I saw on television when I was in India I think in 2017. However, I was desperate to watch this movie. So, before I watched this movie, I started watching more violent films or more films that talks about crime and honour killing so that I am able to absorb in the brutal scenes and watch it without fear. Coming to Anushka Sharma's performance, when I saw this film, I was like: How can Anushka not receive an award for this performance in 2016? It's not easy to play such a role because you have to see murders in front of you. She is a courageous and strong woman for playing this role. Anushka's performance has made me realised that Award Ceremonies in India are a hoax. Deepika Padukone only won awards because the film was popular, not because her acting was that good. Anushka Sharma and Priyanka Chopra act much better than Deepika does, but still, it's sad to see that Deepika gets all the awards. Even Anushka's husband, Virat Kohli, praised Anushka for her performance in the film and also felt that she should have won the Best Actress Award in the year of 2016. He was mind-blown while watching this film. Enough of Anushka, let me come to Neil Bhoopalam. Neil was amazing in the role of Arjun Puri. He knew how to change his behaviour in different moods. It was just a joy to see both Anushka and Neil together in the film. Neil is just a joy to watch. I hope to see more of his films in the future. I have seen him in Lust Stories (2018), but I want to see more of Neil Bhoopalam. Coming to the supporting cast, I loved how Darshan Kumar nailed the negative character of Satbir, a ruthless goon who killed his own sister for dishonouring their caste. The rest of the caste was amazing in portraying how village people who follow their caste strongly behave, think and do. Coming to Deepti Naval, who played Ammaji, the village chief, in the film, I think that she has shown how a village chief feels and behaves and all of that. A village chief is always conscious about what the society thinks of him or her and wants to stick to his or her caste to be proud of their caste. One thing that I love about this film was that it is direct and there were no songs, so the film is short and direct. There is a soundtrack released for this movie, but I am glad that they did not make unnecessary music videos for this film. They just added some background music with the songs from the soundtrack and played it and that's how we can appreciate the music. Especially using the song Le Chal Mujhe (Female Version), which was sung by Shilpa Rao, as the background song for the party scene of the film, is amazing! Bollywood seriously needs to learn from NH10, on when to use music videos and when not to, so that the movie is not draggy. It is sad that things like honour killing still exists in today's times, in the 21st century. And not just in rural areas of India, it exists in the urban areas of India as well. You will probably be surprised because we all know that Kerala (A state in South India) is the most literate state in the whole of India. So, you would expect Malayalis to be all open-minded and all of that. However, not everyone in Kerala is that open-minded. And yes, honour killing also does not only happen to Hindus, it can happen to Christians as well. Click right here to read about the honour killing incident that happened in Kerala in 2018. And also, just because South India is generally more educated than North India in terms of literacy rate, it does not guarantee that all South Indians would think in an advanced way. It also does not guarantee that all North Indians are backward in their mind set. It is from person to person. In fact, honour killing also happens in urban South India by the way. Click here for the story of honour killing that happened in Hyderabad, a city located in the South Indian state Telangana. Honestly, after reading about the honour killing stories above, I have learnt that it happens every where in India. Anushka and Neil, in this film I mean, have shown that education is really important because with education, it changes our mind set and makes us into more open-minded people. However, that may not always be the case because if honour killing still happens in an urban city like Hyderabad and the most literate state like Kerala, then that is when education is useless. What people in India and Indians need to learn is that:
Should I watch it?
It is an amazing story! You can watch it again and again. But however, if you are desperate to watch this film but can't take violent scenes, then I would suggest that you watch more films on violence, blood and honour killing and prepare yourself to be able to absorb violent scenes before you watch this film Who is it suited for? It is suited for: - People who want realistic films - People who want to be fed with great content - People aged 18 and above. Do not show children this or they will get nightmares. Brutal realities will scare them. My Personal Film Rating (I have started this section to score the film as per my experience from watching this film. You guys can trust me on my ratings.
